What It Is

The 文昌塔 is the pagoda of Wenchang, the Taoist god of literature. It is the single most common object in a Chinese student's room — placed on the desk before an exam, not after.

• 文昌 is the deity of literature, scholarship and examinations.
• The standard placement is the study desk, in the 文昌 position.
• Carvings are traditionally in an odd number of tiers.
• Cut from transparent, holds light rather than colour — no two pieces identical.

How to Judge It

Every carving in this collection is checked against the same standard:

• Count the tiers — odd numbers are traditional.
• Each tier should be cut, not just grooved.
• The spire should be intact — this is the fragile part.
