Sleep

In the old telling, night is the phase when the body collects what the day spent, and amethyst is the stone most often kept near a bed for it. What the tradition describes is narrower than the internet suggests: a boundary at the end of the day, a signal that the working hours are closed.

These are the stones people traditionally keep where the day ends:

  • On the bedside table, or under the pillow where the beads cannot press on your wrist.
  • Worn through the evening and taken off last, so the bracelet marks the hour.
  • Held in the left hand for three slow breaths before the light goes off.

Our piece on amethyst walks through the whole practice.

How to choose

  • Bead size. 8 mm is light enough to forget, 10 mm is the middle path, 12 mm shows the colour best. Fit is set by length, never by diameter, which is what our size guide is for.
  • Colour. Take the one your eye returns to, and check the colour sits inside the bead rather than pooled in the cracks.

Amethyst is filed under Water in the Chinese framework, the phase of night and depth, so this shelf and our Five Elements guide point at the same stones.

To be clear: no stone here diagnoses, treats or cures anything. We write about tradition, and we sell stones. If your nights have been short for weeks, that belongs with a doctor.
